Message from Mr. Alexander Thrower - Head of School
15th October 2021
The School is delighted with the news that PBL students won the Envirothon Sustainability Innovation Award. Our rating was 'Excellent' There were 145 teams competing. 9 teams (Top 6%) achieved were rated 'Superior'. 14 teams (the next top 10%) won the Excellent Award. 25 teams (17%) received 'Honorable Mentions'. This is a national competition across China. Congratulations to all those involved - students and teachers.
PBL is an important curriculum component here at HQIS. It challenges our students to find real solutions to real-world problems and this means research, critical thinking, creativity, empathy, collaboration and problem solving with determination, resilience, focus and independence. Some of that might seem beyond the realm of a traditional curriculum subject, but these soft-skills are hugely valuable and schools see them as hugely important in developing leadership qualities in young people, a vital preparation for life-long learning in the age of AI and Internet Mark 2, and so important in the workplace today.
We have opened our new L2 Graded Reading Room so Elementary students can find the right books and test themselves online with their Star account. As we all know, the reading habit is key to educational success and we have everything ready to support successful readers. Our parents are very important in this regard. Children should be reading 2 or three books per week at the right level of challenge.
With reluctance we decided to cancel the Family Picnic on Sarlturday 30th. The ongoing Pandemic, construction work, and unsettled weather make the event harder to deliver this year but its success in the past makes it part of the HQIS tradition so we can look forward to this, and similar events, with keen anticipation.
Whatever you do this weekend we hope you enjoy some family time together.
